Josh Meyers graduated in 2011 from the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration on Management Information Systems. Josh was actively involved in the Chi Alpha ministry at UMD. He currently lives in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area as an IT business partner for Honeywell’s thermostat product division. When he’s not at his job or working with the media team at his church, Josh finds time for his ongoing house-flipping projects at his home. Josh shares how Chi Alpha prepared him for effective ministry in the marketplace.
Describe the impact Chi Alpha had on you as a student.
Primarily, the impact Chi Alpha had on me was an invitation to experience more of the Holy Spirit. Before I was really engaged in Chi Alpha, I didn’t really understand the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and as part of that, I really didn’t understand how important community was. I guess it all came down to that they really called out the gifts they saw in me that I didn’t know I had.
How did Chi Alpha equip you to serve in the marketplace and church ministry?
The most important thing Chi Alpha taught me was the importance of godly relationships, community, and mentors. The importance of daily communion with God. Scripture says whatever you do, do it unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). The Lord has called me to this workplace and to do it with excellence.
Can you share any examples of how God has used you in your position at work?
I’ve been able to mentor a young professional at work through a Bible study and his professional career. He comes to me for advice in his personal and professional life. Also, God’s favor in my own personal work—I find that I get a lot of opportunities other people don’t get. I have also been recognized as being in the top one percent of all IT professionals in the organization because of all the mentors I’ve had in the last four years.
What advice do you have for our soon to be Chi Alpha alumni who will be making the transition from college to work?
Bottom line is preparation time is never wasted time. Wait on God to promote you, just as He did for Joseph, and don’t get ahead of God. Stay in your lane and don’t compare yourself with others. God has a unique plan for each of us. Don’t try to run somebody else’s race.
