Do you want to make a difference? Do you want to impact the globe with the message of the gospel? Do you love coffee? Well then, EIU Chi Alpha may be your perfect future home.
Nestled in the rolling corn fields of east central Illinois lies historic Eastern Illinois University. Founded in 1895, EIU has become home to such influencers as Tony Romo, Jimmy G, Burl Ives and many NFL coaches (affectionately named “Coach U”). And three years ago my wife Jenn and I pioneered Chi Alpha here along with our three children.
Our university has over 7,000 students from across the Midwest and students from 41 Nations. We love international students! Having served as missionaries in South Africa, we understand what it’s like to live 9,000 miles away from friends and family. We have a heart to serve international students and be a message-bearer to all faiths: Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Agnostics, and everyone in between. EIU Chi Alpha is the only RSO on our campus (secular or spiritual) hosting monthly international student events on campus. And we have an AWESOME time. Between 100-150 students come each month to party! We also have a close working relationship with the Office of International Students.
We have welcomed several of our alumni back to serve in a give-a-year and others have launched out into full time ministry themselves. We currently have three PT staff on our team, but we are expanding. We’re inviting (2) more full-time MAs (recent CMIT grads welcome) to apply and come join our growing ministry. Your position would include serving with Life Groups, Discipleship, leadership development, international ministry, weekly meetings, barista opportunities (see below) and monthly events. If you play an instrument or can sing in the worship band, total bonus!
Here’s what we have to offer:
1. We are in the process of acquiring a $400,000 5500 sq ft ministry center (previously used as a Vineyard Church) across the street from campus. You would be provided (if all females or all males or a married couple) with FREE living space in the new ministry center (just help out with utilities). The ministry center has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. You wouldn’t even need transportation as campus is walking distance and we have a bus system to places like Walmart. If you do have a vehicle, free parking is provided.
2. Not only will the new ministry center be used for staff meetings, events (except weekly Chi Alpha meetings on campus) and functions, but we will be opening a coffee shop on the main floor (9am – 2pm; M-F) to serve the students and the community. If you love coffee and connecting with new people, this is the chance of a lifetime! Come help us as we renovate the ministry center from top to bottom and establish a coffee shop. You would have the opportunity to serve a few hours each day along with all of the other staff and students in the cafe and bring Jesus to whomever walks in the doors. We truly look at EIU Chi Alpha as a team effort.
3. We have full access to President Glassman (he lives five doors down from us) and we have lunch with him each year. Changes are made and he hears the voice of EIU. We also belong to ACM (Association of Campus Ministers) here at EIU and all seven ministries on campus get together each month to pray and give updates and to stand for one another. Our campus really is family.
4. We would love the opportunity to connect with you and hear your story. If you are a good fit for our ministry, we would extend an offer to provide you transportation from anywhere in the U.S. (driving or flying) for a short visit. We would love to show you around the campus and around Charleston (a town of 21,000) three hours south of Chicago so that collectively we can prayerfully make the best decision.
God bless you all,
Mark & Jenn Bettinger
